As you walk along, you look to your right, and there it is. You do the mandatory walk around and what do you see? You look down at your not-latest iPhone. You look back up, and 1. You hold the home button down and get your new secretary Siri on the line to call as many friends as you can. Then, just like the other millions of us out there who hit the Apple store, or favorite clothing store or restaurant, your brain starts talking.

My last iPhone was easily pushing six months old — how old is that?! I was down to my last 10 pairs of shoes and none of them were going to work with those jeans I need to wear tomorrow night. I know I have. The moral of the story is although we all may be motivated for different reasons, the law of emotion is the real deal.

When that smartphone, new pair of shoes or whatever we need makes the call, we answer it. In life, you and I make decisions emotionally first and we sit back later and rationalize — we build our list of reasons why. Besides being tooth nerds, are we really all that different from everyone else? Most patients are just like us. They make their decisions emotionally first and they justify them later with logic.

In fact, most make them for one of six reasons: You meet, get to know and understand each other, build trust, and ultimately, get to the emotion — to what matters most and will make patients say yes to your proposed treatment. Initial attraction Ladies, somewhere along the way you have created a picture in your mind of your Prince Charming. And gentlemen, you have your ideals too.

What I want you to recognize is your patients think just like you do when they evaluate you and the office you work in. Know who you want to date. We all have our ideal type in the dating game. Our patients have their type too. Step one then is to define for yourself and your team who your patient type is and become attractive to them. Build a great reputation. Make a great first impression. First impressions are everything! Think about a time when you were out with your friends and met someone who absolutely blew you away. How did you feel?

And what did you do the very next day, if not the moment they were over? If your experience resembles most, your first date memories are easily dialed up. You felt fantastic, and when the date was over, you set up a second date and texted your closest friend to talk about how fantastic it went. In the dating game, we know a few things about the wow first date.

We know that attraction piece that brought us together is front and center. We also know that if we really want to impress someone, we pick a hot spot. What else do we know? And we know we want them to feel good in our presence. First, 95 percent of success is in the system. Actually we learn to be more competitive, envious and greedy.

How to Have a Long Distance Relationship in Dental School | D5ASDA

This gets extended to practicing dentists…the real world. Dentistry is a flawed profession at many levels. Run by technophiles who know nothing about what makes people tick. Thanks for the great post. I totally agree— well said. Which is why I contacted you to thank you for your post 10 Reasons Why My Patients Love Me There were several commentaries about me on other blogs by well-known dental leaders in our community.

While I found their commentary to be a bit judgmental, and the humor and the point of my blog was lost on them, your commentary showed empathy, compassion, and humor. All qualities that are missing from some in our profession among others. OMG I love your blog!! Feel free to come back to this post and vent any time. Many of us will definitely appreciate any funny memories you might bring back. A breath of fresh air. I would add patients. While I was there, I had a patient physically threaten me. In my office, any of these behaviors will earn you a one-way trip out the door, and, in the case of physical or sexual assault, a call to the police.

In school, you had to suck it up, unless a professor took up for you my professor did, bless him. I had some truly wonderful patients, and I loved working with them. And barry, I can see how dental school would bring out the worst in some people. Too often, it was made clear that it may not matter how intelligent, conscientious, or competent you were. Some female students found they could get extra help in some classes by flirting with the male professors.

I think the system for educating dentists could use a serious overhaul. I once had a patient chase me around my dental office looking for her crown because I refused to seat a crown for her that another dentist prepped. When I walked into the room, she was nasty from the start.

10 Reasons Dental School Sucked

There is something very wrong with that. Our college was on the honor system. The cheaters had frat brothers doing their home work and freely looked up answers during tests. I once saw a student in the bathroom stall with 5 books. Incidentally, these were the ones who had the great practices when they exited school.

Now that I am a preacher fifty some years later I know that the teachers and cheaters will have a reckoning at some point. The residents could be a bit arrogant, but the instructors were pretty cool. I did have to laugh when one of my female classmates told us one of the oral surgery residents told her female students were only in dental school to find husbands. Yes, we are going to pay crazy tuition to be abused for 4 years by patients, instructors, residents, and administrators, just to try to find a husband in a pool of arrogant, misogynistic tools. Funny— our perio people were pretty nice.

I think because the department was headed up by a really sweet guy. Thanks for your list, it was really therapeutic for me to read. To add to the weird patients, I had some: He also wanted me to give him my teeth!!! He said we would take me on an all expenses pain trip to his homeland.

Who We Are

The profession will be lucky to have another woman in it. I think the worst in our school were the pros instructors.

The ones who knew what they were doing were mean and condescending. There were a few nice, knowledgable instructors, but most were one or the other, and not both. And consider the fact that I am a student in a dental school in Greece!

Ddent, I love to hear about the similarities with other cultures! I always thought many of these things I write about were typical American qualities.
